Wanted Man Arrested After Ramming Police Vehicle

A 24-year-old man wanted on multiple assault charges has been arrested after ramming a police vehicle.

Ontario Provincial Police in Middlesex County assisted First Nations police Friday night in the arrest of Darryl Francis Sturgeon of the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation.

The OPP say First Nations police received reports of two speeding vehicles around 7pm on River Rd on Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation. Police tried to stop one vehicle on Fairgrounds Rd but the vehicle fled, and the traffic stop was ended due to safety concerns. The OPP say while the First Nations officer was stopped at Oneida and Bodkin Rds the second vehicle appeared and struck the cruiser from behind, injuring the officer.

That vehicle also fled the scene, but the driver, who turned out to be the wanted male, was later stopped and arrested while driving another vehicle.

Sturgeon is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5000, driving while disqualified and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.

Sturgeon had been wanted by police for allegedly assaulting three people at a home Tuesday night. He is facing multiple assault, mischief and other charges in that incident.

Sturgeon was held for a bail hearing Saturday in London Criminal Court.

The First Nations officer injured when the vehicle was rammed was treated in hospital with minor injuries and released.
