London Couple Wins $5M

A London couple that used the same lottery numbers for 30 years finally saw them pay off to the tune of $5-million.

Larry and Cynthia Cluness won the Lotto 6/49 jackpot in the September 23 draw.

“Almost 30 years ago, we purchased a quick pick ticket and have stuck with those numbers ever since,” said Larry, while collecting the winnings at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.

Larry, who usually plays twice a week, had the clerk at the gas station check his ticket for him.

"The words ‘big winner’ came up on the screen and the clerk yelled out ‘you won $5-million,’” said Larry, who immediately went home to share the news with his wife.

"When Larry walked in the door, he was shaking and tearing up. I’ve never seen him like that before,” said Cynthia. “When he told me the good news – I couldn’t believe it. But then I started thinking about all the things we could do.”

The couple plan to set aside a portion of their winnings to ensure their three adult children and five grandchildren are taken care of financially. A new home or a remodel of their current house is also planned to make it more accessible for Cynthia, who has trouble navigating stairs. But before they start looking for realtors or contractors, the couple plans to travel.

“I have a friend in Holland who often comes to visit us. I’ve always told her that once we win the big one, we’d visit her. And now we can," said Cynthia.

The winning lottery ticket was bought at a Petro Canada on Dundas St.
