The London neighbourhood where a missing woman was found dead is showing support for her loved ones.
Residents of the quiet Summerside subdivision of southeast London are still reeling from the news of the discovery of Josie Glenn's body last week.
One resident of Summerside had an idea for her neighbours to stand in solidarity with Josie's family and friends. Katherine McIntyre says, just like all of her neighbours, she was in shock by what happened not too far from her front door.
"It was horrifying, especially when you hear it in our neighbourhood," says McIntyre. "It's just a small suburban neighbourhood, lots of families, lots of kids. Everyone is always outside playing."
Once the shock of the events wore off, the idea to have residents of Summerside shine purple lights was floated on the neighbourhood's private Facebook page. McIntyre says the idea was borrowed from an initiative by the London Abused Women's Centre.
"With the Shine the Light going on for November, I said maybe this is a good idea to just see our efforts toward something more positive," says McIntyre.
McIntyre agreed to purchase purple light bulbs for people who asked for them. She says the idea soon took off and there were at least 100 people asking for multiple bulbs within 24 hours. The demand hasn't let up.
"We've been clearing out every hardware store in town making sure we can get them, especially if anybody else decides they want to do this in their neighbourhood," says McIntyre, adding that a couple of local businesses are donating purple light bulbs.
An event is being planned for Thursday evening at Meadowgate Park. A bulb handout will begin at 6pm followed by a silent vigil for Josie Glenn. Light bulbs are $5 each with all proceeds supporting the London Abused Women's Centre.
