Barber was active in the NDP, both as an organizer and as a candidate in London West. She also served as a member of London's Board of Control from 2006 to 2010.
When news of her passing reached the community, Londoners paid tribute to her on social media.
A huge loss! She set the bar for so many of us involved in politics & civic life in #LdnOnt, #onpoli & #CdnPoli. She was an inspiring mentor, leader & friend whose courage, integrity & commitment to #socialjustice will be forever be remembered

A trail blazer for women in politics. Will miss her voice, her passion for London and making a difference @GinaBarber_W9 . My prayers and thoughts to her family.

For the past 3 years I’ve had the privilege of working with @GinaBarber_W9 on #LdnOnt’s Committee of Adjustment, and for the past 12yrs with the local #NDP. Her passing today is a loss. She cared deeply about this community.

Gina Barber was an ever-present force in my #NDP world for the past 30 years. Her death is such a loss. Her legacy - of activism, of feminism, of progressive women unapologetically taking their place in politics - will live on in the work that we do. Rest well, Gina. We're on it.
