Charge Dropped Against Mother Of Dead Baby

The Amherstburg woman charged after a dead baby was found in a downtown London dumpster more than a year ago has had one of the two charges against her dropped.

The Crown withdrew the charge of failing to obtain assistance in child birth against Samantha Richards at a brief court hearing on Wednesday.

Richards' defence lawyer, Patricia Brown, said the Crown dropped the charge on the basis that there was "no reasonable prospect of conviction."

The Crown is moving forward with a charge of disposing of a child’s body after delivery against Richards. A ten day preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin on February 1.

Richards was arrested three days after the body of a baby was discovered in a garbage dumpster in the area of Richmond St. and Mill St. on June 16, 2016. She was released on bail six days later.

The 24-year-old was not present during Wednesday's proceedings.
