Uncooperative Man Ends SIU Probe

The refusal to cooperate by a 26-year-old man who was hit by a vehicle while running from London police has led the Special Investigations Unit to drop its probe into the incident.

Police were waiting to arrest a man on an outstanding warrant outside of a home on Wharncliffe Rd. S on May 3 when the man ran across the busy road and was hit by a passing vehicle. The man continued running but was arrested shortly after.

Ontario's police watchdog was called in to investigate but the man refused to be interviewed by SIU investigators or allow them access to his medical records in relation to the incident. Days later, investigators tried to track the man down to see if he had changed his mind but were unable to find him.

“The man declined to provide the SIU with a statement or otherwise participate in an SIU investigation. Accordingly, I have terminated the investigation into this incident,” said SIU Director Tony Loparco in a statement.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
