Cyclist Hit By Alleged Drunk Driver

A 26-year-old London man is accused of drunk driving after a crash that sent a cyclist to hospital in northeast London.

The cyclist, a 27-year-old man, was riding his bike southbound when he was struck by an eastbound pickup truck in the intersection of Highbury Ave. and Killarney Rd. around 8pm on Monday. The cyclist suffered serious injuries. He remains in hospital in fair condition, London police said Tuesday morning.

According to investigators, the cyclist had a green light when he crossed into the intersection. Highbury Ave. has separated bike lanes, but they are not protected.

Tayler Wareham of London is charged with driving with more than 80 mg of alcohol in his blood causing bodily harm. He is scheduled to appear in London court on July 26.

This is the second crash involving a cyclist in London in less than a month. On June 13, 79-year-old Melvin Hodgins was killed when his bicycle collided with a flatbed truck on Adelaide St., just north of Dundas St.
