Local MPPs Appointed To Shadow Cabinet

London's three New Democrat MPPs have been handed critic roles for the Official Opposition at Queen's Park.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath announced the appointments to the shadow cabinet on Thursday.

London-Fanshawe MPP Teresa Armstrong will serve as the Official Opposition's Deputy House Leader and Critic for Home Care and Long Term Care. London West MPP Peggy Sattler has been named as Critic for Economic Development, while newly elected MPP for London North Centre Terence Kernaghan will serve as Critic for LGBTQ Issues.

"I'm very proud of the important roles that our amazing MPPs from London will play in our caucus," said Horwath. "I know that each of them is ready to stand up for families in their region and across the province, and for the services they count on to build a good life."

Armstrong, who has represented London Fanshawe since defeating Liberal incumbent Khalil Ramal in 2011, is no stranger to the Home and Long-Term Care portfolio. She was the critic for the NDP in the last session of the legislature, while also serving as critic of seniors' affairs and anti-racism directorate.

Sattler, who first won the seat in London West in 2013 after spending 13 years as a public school board trustee, previously served as the critic for both education and women's issues.

Kernaghan, an openly gay rookie MPP, was able to take the seat in London North Centre in the June election. The seat had been held by Liberal Deputy Premier Deb Matthews for 15 years prior to that.
