UPDATE: Gas leak shuts down Hamilton Road area

Natural gas service won't be restored to a section of east London until Thursday morning, after a gas line was ruptured by construction crews on Hamilton Road, near Egerton.

According to Union Gas, a pipeline was struck during road construction around 10 a.m. Wednesday. Union Gas crews went door-to-door to turn off gas meters in the area and are working to repair the pipe.

Trafalgar Public School and all homes and businesses within a 100 metre radius of the gas leak were evacuated. Trafalgar students were moved down the road to Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts.

"It was a precautionary measure," said Deputy Fire Chief Jack Burt of the evacuation. "It is a large gas leak and there is a tool on its way to make the necessary repairs."

Firefighters will remain on scene until the repair is completed, said Burt.

London police closed Hamilton Road between Egerton Road and Chesley Avenue for several hours on Wednesday, but the road was reopened to traffic around 7 p.m.
