Man charged after hospital staff threatened

A 27-year-old St. Thomas man has learned the hard way that violent outbursts in the emergency room don't lead to faster treatment.

It was around 7:20 p.m. on Christmas Day when the man walked into the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital and demanded to be seen by a doctor immediately. After being told by hospital staff that it would be a few minutes, the man allegedly began banging on and pulling the triage door. He went on to allegedly verbally threaten emergency room workers, going as far as to suggest he had a weapon and was willing to use it.

St. Thomas police arrived and determined the man did not have a weapon, but allege that he had made the comment in an effort to intimidate hospital staff into treating him faster.

The man is now charged with uttering threats, public mischief and breach of probation. He will appear in court in relation to the charges at a later date.
