Ontario's law enforcement oversight agency is investigating the death of a man while in custody.
London police arrested the 29-year-old man on an outstanding charge around 3 p.m. on Boxing Day, according to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The man was placed in a holding cell to await a bail hearing.
The hearing was held on Thursday morning and the man was then transferred to the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre. Shortly after his arrival, the man suddenly collapsed and was rushed to Victoria Hospital in London. He died there shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday.
Since the death occurred while in custody, the SIU has taken control of the case and assigned two investigators. Consequently, London police will not comment on the incident.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. Anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
