Fire forces evacuation of Saunders

Students at Saunders Secondary School got to cut out a little early Monday after a fire broke out inside a facilities area.

London firefighters were called to the school at 941 Viscount Rd. around 3 p.m. The blaze was said to be inside the wood shop's dust collection system.

"It produced an extensive amount of smoke. There were no injuries from the fire itself, but there was a large amount of work involved to get at the fire and now we are in the process of removing all the smoke from the building," said Platoon Chief Manager Dean Baker.

The school was evacuated as a precaution and a notice on its website states that “all community use/rental agreements are cancelled” for Monday night as a result of the fire.

Damage to the school is believed to be minimal, according to Baker.

Parents picking up students at nearby Westmount Public School were instructed to park across the street at Westmount Shopping Centre as the driveway to the school was blocked by emergency crews.
