Police are thanking a Good Samaritan for saving the lives of a woman and her family pet in Oxford County.
The Ontario Provincial Police said on Thursday shortly before 9:16 p.m., the Good Samaritan was driving down Huron Street in Zorra Township when he noticed the rear of a house fully engulfed in flames. He rushed to the home, started knocking on the door and was able to wake a 38-year-old woman who was asleep inside the home when the fire started.
The woman and her elderly golden retriever were safely removed from the home.
Emergency crews responded to the home shortly after and found it fully engulfed.
"I would like to thank the Good Samaritan that stopped and assisted in helping the owner of the home and her family pet escape without injury," said Inspector Tony Hymers, detachment commander for the Oxford County OPP. "He ultimately saved this woman's life and her family pet while putting his own safety at risk."
