Man loses $140,000 in computer scam

Police are reminding residents about a computer virus scam following an incident in Norfolk County.

On March 6, Ontario Provincial Police were contacted by a concerned resident reporting they had been the victim of an online scam.

According to police, the resident was operating their computer in January 2017 when they received a pop-up notification saying there was a virus on the computer that was compromising its functionality.

The owner clicked on the pop-up, followed all of the instructions and signed a form indicating that repairs were completed.

Between January of 2017 and March 2019, several emails were exchanged and further remote access to the owner's computer was allowed.

When the victim reviewed his bank statements recently, he realized that his line of credit had been accessed with approximately $140,000 being removed by the time the fraud was discovered.

Police are urging people to ignore any online pop-ups and to never allow anyone access to your computer or give out banking information to someone you do not know.
