UPDATE: One dead in train-vehicle crash

A  Zorra Township is dead after a vehicle collided with a freight train east of Thamesford.

The Oxford County Ontario Provincial Police said a Volkswagen Jetta travelling north on 31st Line in Zorra Township was struck by an eastbound train on the tracks north of Highway 2, just before 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The OPP have confirmed one person inside the vehicle, 92-year-old Helen Beggs of Zorra Township, was pronounced dead at the scene.  Beggs was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The rail crossing is equipped with lights to warn drivers of an approaching train, but does not have safety arms.

Police have closed a section of 31st Line between Roads 68 and 74 as they investigate the cause of the collision. They are asking the public to avoid the area until further notice.
