Man charged after police standoff near Stratford

A 50-year-old man is facing charges after police surrounded a home southeast of Stratford overnight.

Oxford County OPP said officers from the West Region Emergency Response Team, West Region Tactics and Rescue Unit, West Region Canine and Crisis Negotiators responded to "an incident" at a residence in Tavistock Tuesday evening.

Officers set up a containment around a residence on Woodstock Street North and ended up taking a male into custody without incident at around 3:10 a.m. Wednesday.

John Mathers, 50, of Tavistock is charged with three counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. He is scheduled to appear in Woodstock court in relation to the charges on Wednesday.

Woodstock Street North was closed between Hope Street and Jacob Street while police responded to the incident, but the road re-opened early Wednesday morning.

The OPP are also thanking the public for their assistance and patience during the incident.
