A date has been set for an inquest into the death of an inmate at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC).
The inquest into the death of 47-year-old Michael Fall will begin on September 23 at the Elgin County Courthouse in St. Thomas, according to Dr. Rick Mann, regional supervising coroner for the West Region, London field office.
Fall died while in custody at the EMDC on July 30, 2017, and under law an inquest is mandatory.
The proceedings are expected to last about five days with 14 witnesses scheduled to give evidence, said Dr. Mann. The purpose of the inquest is to examine the circumstances regarding Fall's death, as well as create recommendations to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
The inquest coroner will be Dr. Elizabeth Urbantke, while Gary Fowler will be counsel to the coroner, said Mann.
