Temporary layoff weeks planned for GM Ingersoll plant

The union for workers at GM's CAMI Ingersoll has confirmed that the plant will experience layoff weeks starting in the fall.

Unifor Local 88 said on Thursday that the first layoff is scheduled to be the week of September 30.

"It's one of the worst words you can use in any business," said Mike Van Boekel, the plant chair for Unifor Local 88 regarding the layoff notice.

Van Boekel said GM has not yet been confirmed how many layoff weeks the plant will experience, but added they are planned for the fourth quarter of 2019. He said the weeks will not be consecutive and he anticipates that there won't be more than two to four layoff weeks.

Unifor also announced that GM's Mexican Plant will lose one of its three shifts starting August 12.  The plants in Ingersoll and Mexico both produce the Chevrolet Equinox.

Van Boekel called the decision to eliminate the third shift an "interesting twist."

"It's very interesting with everything going on that they would take a plant that is actually much cheaper to run and shut them down over us," he said. "I think that speaks volumes for the quality of our vehicle and I'm just kind of surprised and happy to hear that GM is choosing quality over quantity."

The CAMI plant in Ingersoll currently employs around 2,200 people.
