'Strange odour' leads to high school evacuation

Reports of a strange odour inside a London high school led to the building's evacuation Wednesday.

Emergency crews were called to Saunders Secondary School on Viscount Road shortly after 12 p.m after several students and some staff reported they were suffering from irritated throats.

The London Fire Department's hazmat team found the air quality was normal inside the school, but some ongoing repair work may have released irritants into the air.

"Workers were dismantling a dust collection system. We believe the wind has kicked up fine dust particles and this has been the throat irritant that has been bothering the kids in the school," said Platoon Chief Shawn Fitzgerald.

Nine students were assessed at the scene by paramedics. None were taken to hospital.

Staff and students were expected to be allowed back inside the school shortly after 2 p.m., once firefighters finished ventilating the building.
