Ontario Provincial Police are offering tips to avoid being the victim of "porch pirates" this holiday season.
Officers have seen a dramatic spike in thieves stealing packages off of front steps with the increased popularity of online shopping.
Media Relations Coordinator Derek Rogers said there are a number of precautions that people can take.
"You can track your deliveries online and try to be home when they arrive," said Rogers. "During the checkout process, you can direct Amazon to deliver that package to a secure location and pick it up there. If you have somebody that lives right next door to you that you can trust, have them accept the delivery if you aren't home. You can also have it delivered to work if your employer is open to that idea."
Rogers said people should consider installing a motion detection home security system that sends cell phone alerts.
Victims are urged to report the incident to local police and the shipping company.
Anyone that sees suspicious activity should contact police or Crime Stoppers. Reports can also be made online at www.opp.ca.
