The time has come for Londoners to kick their old Christmas tree to the curb.
Curbside collection of the evergreens will begin on Monday. The city is asking residents to have their trees placed within one metre of the curb by 7 a.m. to ensure they are not missed by crews during the week-long collection.
All trees will then be chipped and composted.
Those hauling their trees to the curb are asked to make sure that all decorations, tinsel, garland, tree skirts, and lights have been removed. Trees left at the curb should also not be placed in plastic bags and residents should ensure the trees aren't frozen to the ground.
Crews tasked with collecting the trees will only make one sweep through each neighbourhood, the city said.
Anyone who misses the curbside collection can bring their tree to any of the city’s four EnviroDepots or temporarily place it in their backyards to provide winter protection for birds. Trees used as backyard bird shelters can then be placed at the curb for pickup during the designated spring yard waste collection.
In past years, the city has collected between 12,000 to 13,000 old Christmas trees throughout the curbside collection period.
