Local health officials are urging people to protect themselves from influenza, after the illness claimed two lives in the London area.
The Middlesex London Health Unit issued its first influenza surveillance report of 2020 on Wednesday. The report covers the period between December 15 and January 4. According to the health unit, influenza activity has increased over the past few weeks, with both Influenza A and B cases being reported.
Between December 15 and January 4, the health unit said there were two reported deaths from Influenza in the community. A total of 44 cases of Influenza A were reported, along with 23 cases of Influenza B. Twenty-three people were hospitalized. The health unit said there were three outbreaks declared during that time period.
The health unit continues to recommend that people get vaccinated against Influenza, and do it soon since it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to provide protection.
"Regardless of the level of local influenza activity, there are a number of easy-to-follow steps that local residents can take to avoid becoming sick throughout the year," the health unit said in a news release. "While washing your hands with soap and warm water, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, remain effective ways to prevent many illnesses, including influenza, local residents should also cover their coughs and sneezes, clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces frequently, and stay home when they feel sick."
According to the health unit, a total of 76 lab-confirmed cases of influenza have been reported in London and Middlesex County since September 1, 2019.
