A fire at a southeast London home that doubles as an animal rescue has left four cats dead.
London firefighters were called to the semi-detached residence at 68 Snowdon Cres. around 5:30 a.m. on Friday. When crews arrived, thick smoke was pouring out from the side of the home.
"The occupant was outside waiting for fire crews arrival," said Platoon Chief Shawn Fitzgerald. "The occupant reported three dogs and approximately 40 cats were inside the house."
Firefighters were able to rescue the dogs and two dozen of the cats, four of which had to be revived with oxygen. Others were later found hiding under the porch. Unfortunately, four cats perished in the blaze.
The female occupant of the home was taken to hospital with smoke-related injuries. Two firefighters also required treatment for bites they received while trying to rescue the cats.
Animal rescue Saving Animals Lives Together operates out of the home. A post on the organization's Facebook page states it will offer an update on the situation soon.
The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen. Fire officials continue to investigate the cause but damage has been estimated at around $120,000.
