Growth at the London International Airport soared to new record-setting heights in 2019.
Last year, the airport saw a whopping 683,155 passengers, a 27 per cent increase over 2018. The unprecedented growth made London the second fastest growing airport in the country over the past 12 months, London airport officials said in a statement on Friday.
"With the significant additions of non-stop service in 2019, we were able to provide more passengers than ever before with the 'easy and comfortable' travel experience," said Airport President Mike Seabrook. "Passengers in the southwestern Ontario region are becoming more aware of the benefits of flying from London International, and the success of the new flights affirms the demand for more destinations."
Swoop, WestJet’s discount airline, began offering non-stop flights from London to seven Canadian, American, and Caribbean destinations last year. The ultra-low-cost airline will launch daily flights between London and Winnipeg this April. WestJet, Air Canada, Sunwing, and Air Transat also increased their service out of London last year, with new flights to Puerto Plata, Cayo Santa Maria, and Las Vegas contributing to the airport's growth.
To accommodate the growth, roughly $12.5 million was invested in the airport for capital improvements in 2019.
"We are looking forward to another record-breaking year in 2020 as we prepare to welcome more passengers and air service," said Seabrook.
