Ontario Summer Games looking for volunteers

Those who might lack athletic ability, but still want to be a part of the Ontario Summer Games when they come to London over the Civic long weekend are getting their chance.

The Games Organizing Committee announced the opening of volunteer registration on Monday. Roughly 800 volunteers will be needed when the competition that pits the province’s top young athletes against one another comes to the city from July 30 to August 2.

“At the heart of every significant event London has had the pleasure of hosting are passionate, and dedicated volunteers," Mayor Ed Holder said in a statement. "This represents a unique opportunity for Londoners to participate firsthand in a truly remarkable event, while at the same time, playing a vital role towards ensuring an equally memorable experience for athletes and spectators.”

The biennial multi-sport event will bring more than 3,400 teenage athletes, as well as coaches and officials to the city over its four day period.

Volunteer roles for the games range from accreditation, security, sport and event operations, transportation, and opening ceremony. Individuals can also apply for volunteer positions within specific sports such as triathlon, sailing, volleyball, and soccer.

This is London's fifth time hosting the summer games. They were previously held in the Forest City in 2018, 2004, 1996, and 1975.

"During the 2018 Games it was incredible to see so many members of our community dedicating their time to make sure the athlete experience was top-notch," said Dave De Kelver, general manager of the London 2020 Ontario Summer Games. "I have no doubt that we will again see that same level of enthusiasm from our returning volunteers, and anyone who is volunteering for the first time."

As part of the registration process, prospective volunteers will be asked a variety of questions including information on availability, areas of interest, and contact information. Those selected will be provided with a uniform to wear during their shifts.

Anyone interested in volunteering can register at www.london2020.ca.
