London area jobless rate down slightly

There was a slight drop in the London area unemployment rate last month.

According to figures released Friday by Statistics Canada, the jobless rate in the London-St. Thomas Census Metropolitan Area was 4.9 per cent in February, down from 5 per cent in January.

The number of people working increased by 1,000 in February to 265,000, as the area saw its seventh straight month of job growth.

The London CMA includes London, St. Thomas, Strathroy, and other surrounding communities.

Nationally, the unemployment rate went up a tenth of a percentage point to 5.6 per cent. The economy added 30,300 net new jobs in February with gains in manufacturing and the retail sector.
