City issues call for affordable rental units

In an effort to shelter more of London's most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic, city officials are turning to landlords and developers for more affordable housing options.

Access to lower rent units has become increasingly difficult, according to the city. So in partnership with local service agencies, the city is calling on the public to help identify rental housing options for those most in need such as the homeless and women trying to escape violence.

"Many of our city’s vulnerable populations are at higher risk during this time and as a community, we need to continue to support all Londoners," Mayor Ed Holder said in a statement. "We are seeking the help from the city’s landlords, developers, builders, and all others in identifying affordable housing units available to rent to help meet the immediate needs of our community."

Currently, in London, there are more than 1,000 people experiencing homelessness who are on the waiting list for affordable housing.

Anyone with available rental units is asked to contact the city's housing services division at Housing@london.ca or call the city's housing services manager Dave Purdy at 519-661-2489 ext. 5596.
