A vandalism spree that left a trail of broken glass through the downtown has ended with charges being laid against a 38-year-old London man.
The owner of an auto body shop at 485 York St. received a notice about an alarm going off at the business around 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday. He checked the shop's surveillance footage, which showed a man throwing rocks at the windows.
Shortly after that security cameras at a storage facility at 277 Maitland St. captured a man throwing rocks at the front windows of that business. The rocks smashed the windows triggering the facility's alarm system. That was followed with a citizen report to police about a man chucking an unknown object at the door of a clinic at 448 Horton St. E.
Then around 10 p.m., an off-duty officer, leaving police headquarters on Dundas Street spotted a man in a parking lot behind the building when a vehicle alarm began to go off. The man walked out of the lot before the officer realized the sunroof to one of the vehicles had been smashed.
Additional officers, including the canine unit, arrived on scene and tracked a suspect to the area of Maitland and York streets. A 38-year-old London man was arrested.
"As a result of the investigation, evidence was obtained to suggest the same suspect was responsible for all four incidents," police said.
The 38-year-old London man is charged with four counts of mischief under $5000 and was scheduled to appear in London court on Thursday.
Damage to the three buildings and vehicle is estimated at around $9,000.
