Two new COVID-19 cases confirmed in London-area

Public health officials in London and Middlesex County have reported two new cases of COVID-19, bringing to an end four consecutive days of zero new infections.

Despite the two additional cases confirmed on Wednesday, the region's total number of cases only went up by one to 631. That is because the lone case reported on Saturday has since been reassigned to another health unit's jurisdiction, according to the Middlesex London Health Unit.

The removal of the case from London, also means the area recorded four straight days of zero cases, one more day than originally reported.

The number of people to recover from the virus in the area shot up from 517 on Tuesday to 546 on Wednesday. Public health officials noted the increase came after an administrative review of data, with another large jump in resolved cases expected for Thursday.

There have been zero COVID-19 deaths locally since June 12, leaving the death toll unchanged at 57.

Southwestern Public Health, which oversees Oxford and Elgin counties, reported one additional case of the virus on Wednesday. That brings the region's total case count since the start of the pandemic to 86. The number of deaths related to COVID-19 remains at five, with none reported over the past 24 hours. Another person previously diagnosed with the virus has now recovered, bringing the total number of resolved cases to 78.

Provincially, 118 new cases of COVID-19 and nine additional deaths were reported on Wednesday.

The number of new cases is up slightly from Tuesday's 112. There have now been a total of 36,178 cases across the province.

Health Minister Christine Elliott noted in a tweet that 30 of Ontario's 34 health units reported five or fewer cases on Wednesday.

"With 18 of them reporting no new cases at all as much of the province continues to avoid outbreaks or spikes in cases well into Stage 2," wrote Elliott.

The four regions recording the largest number of new cases were Toronto, Windsor-Essex, Peel Region, and York Region.

Ontario's death toll has now hit 2,700 after nine more deaths were reported over the past 24 hours.

The number of recoveries is up. According to the latest epidemiology report, 202 infected people have been given the all-clear, increasing the province's total number of resolved cases to 31,805.
