London-area jobless rate climbs again

While both the national and provincial jobless rates dropped last month, the London area saw another increase.

According to figures released Friday by Statistics Canada, the unemployment rate for the London Census Metropolitan Area hit 12.6 per cent in June after sitting at 11.7 per cent in May. The London CMA includes St. Thomas, Strathroy, and other surrounding communities.

The increase in the jobless rate came as both the provincial and national unemployment rates fell last month. Ontario's rate came down to 12.2 per cent in June from 13.6 per cent in May, while the national rate went from 13.7 per cent to 12.3 per cent. Every province reported a net gain in jobs last month, as many continued to re-open their economies amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among cities in the region, Windsor saw a decrease in its unemployment rate from 16.7 per cent to 15.2 per cent. Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton, Guelph, and Toronto all saw increases.
