One new COVID-19 case reported in London-area

For the first time in two days, a new case of COVID-19 has been confirmed in London and Middlesex County.

Public health officials with the Middlesex London Health Unit reported on Thursday one additional person in the area has tested positive for the virus. It is only the second new case to be confirmed in the region this week. On Monday, a single case was reported, that was followed by zero new cases on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The city and county now have a total case count of 641, with no new COVID-19 related deaths reported since June 12. The total number of deaths since the pandemic began remains at 57.

There were zero new recoveries over the past 24 hours to leave the area's total number of resolved cases at 570.

Thursday's figures show there are currently only 14 active cases in London-Middlesex.

Local long-term care homes and retirement facilities remain outbreak free.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit that oversees Elgin and Oxford County, has not recorded any new case of COVID-19 since Saturday. That region's total number of cases sits at 87. The number of resolved cases is up to 80, with one more previously infected person getting the all clear. The number of deaths is unchanged at five.

Middlesex-London, Elgin and Oxford are all slated to enter Stage 3 of reopening on Friday. Stage 3 will see nearly all businesses open their doors to customers, including gyms, movie threatres, and restaurants and bars for indoor dinning.

Meanwhile, a day after reporting its lowest number of new daily cases in 16 weeks, the province has seen a slight increase in those testing positive.

Public health officials said there has been 111 new lab-confirmed cases over the past 24 hours. That is up from 102 on Wednesday, the lowest the daily numbers have been since March 25. Of the province's 34 health units, 30 reported five or fewer cases and 19 had zero new cases.

Since the start of the pandemic, 37,163 Ontarians have tested positive for the virus.

Thursday saw five more COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the provincial death toll to 2,737.

"With 141 more resolved, there are 30 fewer active cases in Ontario. The number of hospitalizations, ICU admissions and vented patients have all declined," Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted.

Currently, 107 people remain in Ontario hospitals battling COVID-19. Of those, 26 are in the intensive care unit, and 20 are on ventilators to help them breathe.

Health officials conducted just over 26,492 tests for the virus over the last 24 hours.
