A homeowner who tried to stop two burglars from breaking into a Norfolk County home ended up being tossed from the suspects' vehicle as it crashed during an escape attempt.
The unusual turn of events began when the homeowner returned to the property on Charlotteville West Quarter Line Road in Charlotteville around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday to find two women who had broken in. The pair ran to an awaiting pickup truck, which the homeowner had blocked in. The suspects then drove their pickup into the property owner's truck, colliding head-on.
A woman and two small children were inside the homeowner's truck at the time of the crash, police said.
At this point, the driver of the suspect vehicle took off running, while the passenger slid over to the driver's seat and continued on in the pickup. In the commotion, the homeowner had hopped into the back of the truck and ended up being thrown from the vehicle after the driver lost control, causing it to roll.
Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt.
Police officers arrived on scene shortly after and arrested two people without incident.
Investigators allege the same suspects also broke into another home on Charlotteville Road 5. All stolen property recovered was returned to its rightful owners.
A 36-year-old woman and a 42-year-old woman, both from Norfolk County, are charged with break and enter, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and dangerous operation of a vehicle.
An additional charge of impaired driving and possession of fentanyl was laid against the 36-year-old.
