Restaurant fire sends one to hospital

Fire officials are working to determine the cause of a fire at a restaurant that just recently celebrated its grand opening.

Fire crews were called to Damascus House, a restaurant in a plaza at Commissioners Road West and Andover Drive just after noon on Tuesday. Fire officials said heavy smoke was pouring out of the restaurant when they arrived.

All of the units in the plaza were evacuated as a precaution, as smoke made its way into adjacent businesses.

London Fire Department Platoon Chief Colin Shewell said firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire after employees of the restaurant attempted to put it out with a fire extinguisher. He added one person was taken to hospital.

"There were a number of individuals that were assessed by our partners at Middlesex London Paramedic Services and one individual was transported to hospital with undisclosed injuries after being assessed," he said.

Damage is estimated at $75,000. Shewell said the investigation into the cause of the fire is in its early stages, but there is no obvious cause.

According to CTV London, Damascus House is owned by Rasool and Faekah Alabrach, who fled Syria eight years ago and eventually made their home in London. They held a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Friday to officially open the restaurant.
