The number of new COVID-19 cases in London and Middlesex County has doubled since Monday.
The Middlesex London Health Unit reported two new laboratory-confirmed cases over the past 24 hours. One of the new cases involves a staff member at a long-term care home. So far this week, there has been a total of three new cases in the region -- zero on Monday, one on Tuesday, and two on Wednesday.
The region's total case count since the start of the pandemic now sits at 649.
The number of recoveries went up by two on Wednesday to 580.
With no additional deaths related to the virus in the London-area in more than five weeks, the death toll is unchanged at 57.
Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, said it had one new confirmed case on Wednesday. That brings that area's total number of cases to 94. Another person previously diagnosed with COVID-19 in that region has recovered to bring the number of resolved cases to 81. There have been no new deaths in the two counties since July 3. The death toll stands at five.
Ontario public health officials noted a slight decrease in the daily COVID-19 numbers.
On Wednesday, 165 new cases were confirmed. That is down from the 203 cases reported on Tuesday, but still, an increase compared to last week's day-to-day cases.
"Locally, 28 of 34 PHUs [public health units] are reporting 5 or fewer cases, with 18 of them reporting no new cases. Ottawa is adding 33 cases, with 25 in Peel and 39 in Windsor-Essex," Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted.
She went on to note more than 50 per cent of Wednesday's new cases involved people under the age of 40.
The province's total case count is now 38,107.
The number of people to recover from the virus is now 33,812, another daily increase province-wide.
"With 207 resolved, there are 42 fewer active cases in Ontario. Yesterday, the province processed nearly 24,000 #COVID19 tests," said Elliott.
Two additional death related to COVID-19 were reported in Ontario since Tuesday, bringing the total number of virus-related deaths to 2,755.
