King St. apartment fire causes over $100K damage

No one was hurt when fire broke out inside of an apartment on King Street, east of Adelaide Street on Friday morning.

Firefighters were called to 654 King St. around 6:40 a.m. where they were told a person was trapped inside the burning structure.

"When fire crews arrived on scene there was heavy fire showing, venting from the second floor. The fire had extended to the third floor with heavy smoke showing as well," said Platoon Chief Shawn Fitzgerald.

As some firefighters worked to extinguish the flames that were shooting out from a second-floor balcony, other firefighters searched the building for the individual who was reportedly trapped.

"A mobility limited person was stuck in another unit within the building, but was safe," said Fitzgerald. "They were protected in place and did not have to be removed from the building because of smoke or fire conditions."

The blaze was put out and a fire investigator arrived on scene to determine the cause.

While no official damage estimate has yet to be released, the loss is expected to be well over $100,000, said Fitzgerald.
