Children left alone in vehicle while parents shopped

Family and Children's Services of St. Thomas and Elgin have been contacted after two children were left alone in a vehicle for more than an hour while their parents shopped.

A passerby spotted the infant and a young child inside a vehicle parked in the Norfolk Mall parking lot on Simcoe Street in Middleton on Friday afternoon. After speaking with the child who confirmed they had been left in the vehicle for an extended period of time, the concerned citizen called police.

The parents returned to the vehicle and were spoken to by police officers who were on scene.

No injuries were reported.

The incident has prompted a reminder from police to parents and caregivers to never leave a child unattended in a vehicle.

"Things have and can go wrong, so don't ever take that chance," said Inspector Joseph Varga.
