Impaired charge laid against sleeping driver

A London police officer had to smash the window of a vehicle to wake an unconscious driver stopped at an east-end intersection.

According to London police, the officer pulled up behind a vehicle stopped at a red light on Egerton Street and Florence Street around 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday. When the traffic light changed to green, the vehicle in front of the officer did not move.

The officer then walked up to the vehicle and knocked on the window. The driver, who appeared to be unconscious, did not move. Out of concern for the driver, the officer made the decision to break the window to unlock the door. It was at this point the driver woke up.

A 24-year-old London man was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a vehicle and failure to comply with a demand made by a peace officer.

He will appear in London court in relation to the charge in December.
