Probable COVID-19 case reported at St. Thomas Christian school

Parents with children who attend St. Thomas Community Christian School might be more hesitant to send their little ones back to class this week.

Southwestern Public Health identified a probable case of COVID-19 linked to the school over the weekend.

“School administrators and our public health team are working in partnership to ensure everyone is informed and knows what to do next so that the risk of the virus spreading further is minimized,” Local Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock said in a statement.

Due to privacy concerns, the health unit will not state whether the infected individual is a student or a staff member. However, close contacts of the person are being notified by the health unit. The school community was informed of the case through an email from the school's principal.

"Our commitment is to keeping the school community safe,” said Principal Jason Schouten. “We’re following public health recommendations, working closely with our public health school nurse and making sure everyone is well supported and well informed throughout this process.”

Elgin and Oxford, the two counties that are overseen by Southwestern Public Health, have recorded a total of 265 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic. Of those, 254 have been resolved, five have died and six remain active.
