Identity of St. Thomas man charged in fatal crash released

Police have identified the 23-year-old St. Thomas man charged with impaired driving following a fiery crash that claimed the life of a woman on Friday.

The head-on crash happened on Highbury Avenue between Manning Drive and Glanworth Drive around 5:20 p.m. Emergency crews arrived to find one of the vehicles engulfed in flames.

A 35-year-old St. Thomas woman, the driver of one of the vehicles, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle , a 23-year-old St. Thomas man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Tyler Besterd, 23, of St. Thomas, has since been charged with impaired driving causing death and driving with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Besterd is scheduled to appear in London court by video in relation to the charges on Monday.
