UPDATE: One death, 26 new COVID-19 cases in London-Middlesex

After two straight days of 53 new cases of COVID-19 in the London-area, the Middlesex London Health Unit reported fewer than half that number on Wednesday.

Twenty-six new cases were reported Wednesday, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 2,200. Of those, 1,826 are considered resolved.

The death reported Wednesday by the health unit was that of a man in his 80s who was associated with a long term care home. His death is the 81st COVID-19 death in the London area since the pandemic began.

Outbreaks are still in effect at Chelsey Park, Country Terrace, and McCormick Home.

One outbreak has been declared over at University Hospital, while a second was identified at Victoria Hospital on Wednesday. The London Health Sciences Centre announced an outbreak on the sixth-floor acute medicine unit at Victoria Hospital. Meanwhile, the outbreak on 8IP General Surgery at University Hospital has been declared over. Outbreaks remain within eight units at University Hospital.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, reported 19 new cases Wednesday for a total of 800 since March. No deaths were reported, so the death toll is still 10.

The number of COVID-19 deaths in Ontario hit a milestone Wednesday. The province reported 43 deaths, breaking the 4,000 mark to sit at 4,035. It also reported 2,139 new cases, the second highest daily total since the pandemic began. The figure marked the second straight day of more than 2,000 new cases.

The number of people in hospital with COVID is now at 932. Of those, 256 are in intensive care and 157 are on ventilators. All of the those numbers are up from Tuesday.
