EnviroDepots open for Christmas tree disposal

Londoners looking to get rid of their old Christmas tree will no longer be able to just drag it to the curb.

The City of London is reminding residents that it is not offering curbside Christmas tree pickup this year. Instead, those looking to discard their winter greenery will have to take it to one of the city's EnviroDepots.

The annual curbside pickup, which saw approximately 13,000 trees collected every year since 2016, was eliminated during multi-year budget discussions as a cost-saving measure.

EnviroDepots throughout the city are open Wednesdays and Sundays. Three extra drop off days have been added to accommodate Londoners wanting to ditch their tree. Those dates are as follows:

Tuesday, December 29 from 12 p.m to 5 p.m. Tuesday, January 4 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, January 10 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

All decorations, tinsel, garland, tree skirts, and lights need to be removed prior to drop off.

Residents can also temporarily place their old Christmas tree in their backyard to provide winter protection for birds. Trees that are three metres or shorter can then be placed at the curb for regular yard waste collection in the spring.

Other ways Londoners can help waste and recycling operators with the post holiday collection include flattening boxes, placing blue bins and garbage containers on level ground and not on snow banks, and putting non recyclable items like Christmas wrap, bags, and decorations in the trash.

Those unsure about what goes in the blue bin can download the Recycle Coach app.
