Western University and Fanshawe College to receive $900k for mental health support

London's two major post-secondary institutions will receive increased access to mental health services thanks to $905,289 from the province.

Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek announced the funding on Friday. The money will be used to increase the number of workers and programs accessible for Western University and Fanshawe College students on-campus and virtually.

"I am proud that the Ontario government is providing these enhanced resources during an incredibly challenging time to be preparing for a career," Yurek said.

Western is set to receive just over $500,000 with Fanshawe's share to reach near $400,000.

The surge in funding is part of the province's investment of $26.25 million for mental health and addiction supports for post-secondary students in 2020-21, a $10.25 million increase over last year. The money will also be used to address the needs of diverse groups such as Indigenous, LGBTQ2+, as well as students with disabilities.

According to the 2019 National College Health Assessment survey, 52 per cent of students reported feeling depressed, 69 per cent experienced anxiety, 12 per cent have contemplated suicide, and a harrowing 2.8 per cent attempted to take their own lives.

"We know that college and university can be a stressful time for our students and that the COVID-19 outbreak has only increased the impact on their mental health," said Ross Romano, Minister of Colleges and Universities.

Providing mental health supports for postsecondary students is part of Ontario’s Roadmap to Wellness, a plan that aims to give children, youth, and adults in Ontario receive appropriate services where and when they need them.
