Wrong way driver on 401 charged with impaired driving

Provincial police credit witnesses with helping to stop an alleged drunk driver after a vehicle was spotted going the wrong way on Highway 401 near Woodstock.

Oxford OPP received nearly a dozen calls about the vehicle that was travelling east in the westbound lanes in Blandford-Blenheim Township just before 8 a.m. on Saturday. The vehicle made a U-turn on the highway before getting off at Towerline Road. Officers were able to stop the vehicle as it attempted to get back on the 401.

A roadside sobriety test was administered to the driver, who is alleged to have failed.

A 79-year-old Richmond Hill man is charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, and driving a vehicle with an open container of liquor.

Police commended the other drivers who reported the incident.

"A number of calls from the public stopped a serious incident before anyone was injured," police said.
