St. Thomas police officer hit by motorcycle during arrest of two suspects

Two men face charges after a St. Thomas police officer was struck by a suspect fleeing on a motorcycle while police attempted to arrest another man.

The incident began Tuesday evening around 5 p.m. while police tracked down a 25-year-old man wanted on a probation warrant.

According to police, the man fled after being recognized by officers which resulted in a foot chase in the area of Hillcrest Avenue. A police service dog was used to track the suspect through several backyards before he was eventually located and arrested.

A 25-year-old man is charged with breach of probation and resisting arrest. He was later released on an undertaking with a court date.

While officers took the first man into custody, police say a 32-year-old man known to the apprehended suspect was seen breaching his release conditions. The second man allegedly tried to flee from police on a motorcycle, but lost control and hit one of the officers.

The man was arrested a short time later and searched by officers which resulted in them seizing a small amount of crystal methamphetamine, cash, cell phones and a flick knife.

During the incident, the officer sustained minor injuries that required medical attention.

A 32-year-old is charged with three counts of failing to comply with a release order, dangerous operation of a vehicle, drug possession, possession of a prohibited weapon and resisting arrest.

The second suspect was held in custody pending a court appearance.
