Robbery suspect shot by firearm used in hold-up

London police say an armed robbery suspect sustained a gunshot wound while attempting to flee the scene of a crash over the weekend.

At around 10:15 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a 911 call about a robbery in the area of Hamilton Road and Rectory Street. According to officers, two victims were approached by two suspects who demanded the keys to a vehicle owned by one of the victims, among other belongings.

Police allege one of the suspects was armed. Only one victim suffered minor injuries during the robbery.

The pair then fled the area in the stolen car before hitting two unoccupied vehicles parked nearby. Following the crash, one of the suspects was wounded when the firearm was discharged inside the vehicle.

Sometime around midnight, officers say they located and arrested one suspect' who was being treated in hospital for a gunshot wound. Two hours later, the second suspect was arrested in the area of Wavell Street and Kiwanis Park Drive.

During the investigation, police say two firearms and the stolen vehicle were recovered.

As a result, two London men, ages 21 and 22, are jointly charged with armed robbery, pointing a firearm, possession of a firearm with a licence, using a firearm during an indictable offence, unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless storage of a firearm and occupying a vehicle with a firearm.

The 21-year-old man faces additional charges of prohibited driving, failing to stop at the scene of a crash, and two counts of possession of a Schedule I substance. The 22-year-old faces additional counts, including possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, and possession of a Schedule I substance.

Both of the accused appeared in court on Sunday and are back in police custody.
