Weekend sees 69 new COVID-19 cases in London area

Nearly 70 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the London area over the weekend.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported Monday that there were 31 new cases on Saturday, 25 on Sunday, and 13 on Monday. No deaths from COVID-19 were reported on any of the three days.

There are now 251 active cases of COVID-19 in London and Middlesex County.

The city and county’s total caseload since the pandemic began now sits at 13,350. Of those, 3,882 involve a variant of concern. .

The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) has 11 COVID-19 inpatients in its care, unchanged from Friday. Of those, five or fewer are listed in intensive care. Currently, there are fewer than five hospital staff who have tested positive for the virus.

Almost 85 per cent of the 625 new COVID-19 cases reported since July 19 were among people who were not yet fully vaccinated. The unvaccinated and those who have only received one dose accounted for roughly 90 per cent of all hospitalizations locally over the last six weeks.

In a continued effort to make the vaccine more accessible to everyone, the health unit has announced it will be hosting a pop-up, walk-in clinic at CF Masonville Place. The clinic will be located near the entrance to SilverCity inside of an empty retail space. It will operate from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from August 30 to September 3 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. September 4 and 5.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, there were nine new COVID-19 cases reported Monday. Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for the region, said that brings the local total number of cases to 4,075 with 3,967 resolved. The death toll was unchanged at 84. Currently, there are 24 active cases in the two counties. As of Sunday, 82.9 per cent of area residents aged 12 and older have had one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 76.1 per cent have received both doses.

Ontario reported 694 new cases on Monday. That brings the 7-day average to 696 cases per day. No deaths were reported, but the number of people being treated in hospital for COVID-19 continues to grow. As of Monday, there were 226 people in hospital being treated for COVID-19. That figure has nearly tripled since the beginning of August.
