An observant employee at a St. Thomas grocery store was able to stop an older woman from losing over $1,000 in a gift card scam.
According to St. Thomas police, a 74-year-old woman went to the Real Canadian Superstore on Talbot Street Monday evening after a fraudster convinced her to purchase $1,400 worth of Google Play gift cards.
"An alert employee knew something was up and took the time to educate this person about online fraud and how they work," the police service said Tuesday.
Police say the woman contacted police and her bank about the incident to protect her identity and her money.
St. Thomas police are thanking the employee for being vigilant and helping prevent the scammer from obtaining the funds.
