UPDATE: River Road fire 'suspicious'

London fire officials are investigating a fire at the former River Road Golf Course in London, a blaze that London police are calling "suspicious."

Crews were called to the scene around 8 a.m. Sunday morning.

London Fire Department Platoon Chief Colin Shewell said the fire was under control just after 8:30 a.m.

"As crews arrived there was heavy black smoke and fire visible from the building," said Shewell. "Crews were able to extinguish the fire from the exterior fairly quickly."

River Road Golf Course is one of the sites that has been proposed as part of the City of London's winter homelessness response.

Trailers at the property were intended to be used as accommodations for individuals facing homelessness in the city during the cold winter months.

"Trailers that will be used as part of this response were not damaged in the fire," said Director, Strategic Communications and Government Relations Patti McKague. "Over the next few days, we will be evaluating the extent to which this fire may impact the proposed Indigenous-led winter shelter site, and will provide additional information as it becomes available."

Approximately 30 firefighters were on the scene along with the district chief.  No injures were reported.

Damage is estimated at $1,000,000.

The investigation continues.
