Charges laid in Medway melee

Charges have now been laid in connection with one of the violent incidents that prompted a letter home to parents from the principal of Medway High school.

OPP were called on Tuesday afternoon about a fight near the school. The following day, there was another fight.

Police say an 18-year-old is charged with assault causing bodily harm in the second incident, while a 15-year old is charged with assault.

Police are still investigating.

The incidents led Medway principal Greg Howard to send a letter home to parents, acknowledging the school was aware of the incidents and that police were involved. In his letter, Howard wrote that a total of five male students and three female students were said to have been involved in the fights. He also said a report of a threat to the school was also posted on social media, possibly by a student.

Howard added that several unsubstantiated rumours were also sparked by social media but have been since been investigated and deemed untrue.

“Student safety, mental health and well-being remain our paramount concern” Howard said.

Those with information or concerns can send a report anonymously to the Medway Cares feature on the Thames Valley District School Board website. Anyone with knowledge about the fights are also encouraged to contact police at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
