SIU investigating after man has 'sudden medical episode' in police custody

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has been called to St. Thomas after a man had to be rushed to hospital while in the custody of St. Thomas police.

The SIU was notified on Thursday by St. Thomas police that a man in custody suffered a "sudden medical episode." According to a news release from St. Thomas police, the was taken to hospital by ambulance.

There has been no information released regarding his condition.

According to a statement from the SIU, the man had been taken into custody after a domestic incident.

"On December 9, 2021, before 12 noon, St. Thomas Police Service officers responded to a domestic call reportedly involving a 29-year-old man," the statement said. "Before police arrived, the man fled. Police located him while he entered a vehicle. He was arrested and brought to the police station. The man then went into medical distress. Paramedics were called and he was taken to hospital where he remains."

The SIU says three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The SIU investigates events involving police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and the discharge of a firearm at a person.
